Samsung PL55 and PL70, New 12 Megapixel Compact Cameras

Samsung emphasizes the merit of the twelve megapixels. After introducing Samsung Pixon 12 mobile phone they extended its family by PL compact cameras serries. Formed so far by the PL50 and PL65, the series reach the magic figure of twelve megapixels compared to the “modest” ten of his younger sisters.

Both models have an optical zoom and 28 millimeters wide-angle lens. It also has smile detector software that make user able to capture his own image. Once the face is centered in the lens, the camera alerts to fire. For its part, PL70 also shot video at a resolution of 720 pixels in H.264 format, compared to 640 x 480, the PL55. Another difference is the size of their LCD screens. PL55 measure of the 2.7 inch, while that of the PL70 reaches three inches.

Both have HDMI output, which allows the passage of the signal to play high definition content on a device that integrates the same technology. Have ISO 3200 and offers several scene modes.

Be available in Europe starting next month. The prices is between 150 and 230 euros.

Kodak EasyShare Z890 Review

At first glance, the EasyShare Z980 is a camera that draws attention. Provide strong and long zoom and a unique handle without providing anything quite decorated. Since, as stated above, the list of benefits of the camera is quite spectacular, it is worth stopping a few seconds to review some of its key features.

The Z980 equipped a CCD sensor 1 / 2, 3-inch and 12-megapixel resolution. Can work both in JPEG and RAW (though sadly not at once), with adjustments for size 12, 10 6-megapixel and 3, in addition to a mode with a ratio of 16:9 and a resolution of 9 megapixels.

One of its strengths is the optics. It’s 24 x zoom increases yields equivalent to a 26-624 mm focal step in universal. Signed by Schneider-Kreuznach, a maximum brightness of f2.8-5.

Video recording in high definition (1280 x 720 points) is another key to this compact, it uses SD Cards and SDHC cards and is powered by four standard AA batteries.

Vertical Grip
kodak_easyshare_z980While the appearance and size are right for a camera in this segment, in fact, the Z980 is pretty impressive at first glance, the reality is that there is excess plastic in their construction and finishes.

The grip, though, is quite comfortable thanks to the grip side, with a nonslip rubber across the subject area.

In this case, however, speaking of the grip you have to do it in the plural, because the Z980 is unchecked when the first compact to offer a vertical grip, including standard with the camera-you can connect with a simple screw mechanism.

The truth is that, beyond a purely aesthetic issue, this does not provide original accessory much. The vertical grip is more comfortable, but since the body of the camera and includes a second trigger for this position, the difference is not huge.

Furthermore, it is a real hassle having to change through a pretty rough position switch working. It is a pity that the Z980 does not include an accelerometer to detect this and activate one or another command.

Easy
The options offered by the camera are very comprehensive, and that incorporates a wheel mode in the upper zone is a statement of intent.

Despite these aspirations, also has a good range of automatic and scenes suitable for all audiences. In fact, the fully automatic mode, identified with a red camera in the dial-behaves wonderfully, with a very high percentage of resulting images perfectly valid in all its parameters.

Otherwise it was a pleasant surprise is the widescreen. Admittedly, the possibility of combining up to three photographs of a single 3 megapixel image is nothing new, but in this case the angle of 26 mm to obtain results quite spectacular, with a coverage of over 180 degrees.

Those who opt for the manual settings to discover the function wheel with the top button is possibly the most useful command of this camera. Although it is too small, combined with the shortcut menus on the screen ready to handle with ease and speed of the main parameters of the shot.

Viewer or Screen?
Despite the good performance of the 3-inch rear monitor, the electronic viewfinder is falling short of the circumstances, as is usual in this type of cameras. It is small and shows a speed of soda and just a very sharp, so in the end just reserved for those shots that need to support the camera against your face for extra stability in the shooting.

Reviewing the menu, another option we liked was the ability to turn back and retrieve the last photo you’ve deleted. Interestingly, the option to always display the histogram display.

But not all is happiness. Despite the general note that the last-time-learning therefore deserves this camera, both the switch as the tiny and poorly placed control of the zoom will remain intact.

The cover of the battery compartment and the card is not to throw rockets. Opening forced to use two hands with enough force, and bearing in mind that access to the card depends on it, we wonder if it could have been resolved with a more elegant option.

An Objective Response
Given that the goal is one of the pillars on which rests the camera, finding that the performance of the lens is just right, taking into account the price and scope, of course, is certainly great news.

True that its zoom is not the most powerful of the time (the Olympus SP-590 UZ retains the record with 26 increments) or the only one with this cover (the Nikon Coolpix P90 incorporates a lens with identical figures to those of the Kodak). Even so, we must recognize that their range of 26-624 mm is spectacular, and even a bit excessive in terms refers to telephoto.

But as we said, in practice the optical group is behaving quite well. The barrel distortion is moderate in most focal angle and disappears at about 40 mm. At the other extreme, geometrical aberrations are also visible, but tolerable.

Note in regard to the sharpness of the optics, both in the center and in the corners of the image. In the position of 26 mm, the resolution is good, it improves as we approach the intermediate focus, and a little flojea to use the telephoto lens.

The effect of vignetting, noticeable in some images with diaphragms more open, it remains within the tolerable limits for this type of goals as ends.

Nor should we forget that the Z980 has a macro focus mode that locks the zoom, but that allows focusing to less than 1 centimeter away with some acceptable results.

Stabilizer, in turn, also makes their job well, though not particularly agile. And we’ve found that you need one or two seconds after the last shot to regain his full effectiveness.

Under these circumstances and with the camera either aside, it is possible to obtain images without using the vibration of the 624 mm telephoto lens and with speeds up to 1 / 20 second.

The system approach and spot metering can be controlled very effectively by the rear wheel. The continuous approach also works very good, although this mechanism has some auto focus problems in the setting of a focal point in the longest.

Similarly, the button for selecting the type of approach (manual, normal, macro or hyperfocal) not convinced, and laying under the classic command to lock the exposure and focus.

Too Much Noise
The Z980 has shutter speeds from 16 to 1 / 2000 second and can work with sensitivity settings of ISO 64 to 1600.

While grateful for that value of ISO 64 to obtain the best of the 12-megapixel CCD, the truth is that the deterioration of the image when light is scarce and climb up the sensitivity is too strong.

The noise is already visible at ISO 200, ISO 400, and from beginning to take forward the final quality of the images. It goes without saying that the values of 800 and 1600 ISO are little more than merely decorative.

The worst thing is that it is not possible to improve these results by using the camera RAW format, which generates almost 20 MB of files. Neither as regards the level of detail or with regard to noise control, we have noticed a great improvement once processed images.

A notable disappointment given that the possibility of working with these files was, a priori, one advantage of this camera versus competition.

For its part, the white balance has behaved oddly-best-in automatic mode than in the default values for tungsten or fluorescent light. Unfortunately, the camera does not offer a manual adjustment to control more precisely these results, although in this case, the RAW files themselves can be helpful.

HD Zoom
Gradually become a standard feature of many compact video recording on high-definition 1280 x 720 points in this does not lack EasyShare.

The quality is pretty fair for a camera of this type, but the good news is that powerful optical zoom remains active during the recording of the sequences.

Finally, the autonomy of the four batteries that employs compact Kodak has enabled us to accomplish something over 150 shots using the LCD screen and point-of-way flash.

While for many users the first part of the equation together with the impressive look of the Z980, may be a powerful enough reason to get this camera, the problem is that for 300 euros it is possible to find models in the window zoom consolidated so long as the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28 or the Canon PowerShot SX10 IS.
