Samsung Spinpoint F3, a New 1TB Hard Drive
Not only processors are evolving rapidly in terms of cycles at the speed they are capable of completing. Hard disks are also growing monthly capacity. Now, Samsung starts selling a disc of 1 terabyte (TB) of space, something that years ago looked very far.
To get an idea, the F3 Spinpoint device works with two dishes (surface on which data are marked) of 500 GB each. Currently, the brand already has a solution that comes to 1 TB, but distributed into three dishes of 333 GB each. Moreover, the speed of the new record is 7,200 revolutions per minute and the manufacturer and plans to make available to suppliers of PCs, servers and storage systems.
According to Samsung, this hard drive can store more data density in each of the dishes, which improves by 30% its behavior with respect to 1 TB disks having three plates, allowing to eliminate one of them. This also streamlines access to data, since the device has only to read two surfaces instead of three.
Mark Geenen, president of analyst firm TrendFocus, has commented on this release that “The market forecasts estimate that the disks with two audiences of 500 GB and higher densities in each experience more than 15% growth annual sales over the next five years”.
