iTunes 8.2 Preps for iPhone 3.0

Yesterday evening, Apple officially released iTunes 8.2 now compatible with firmware 3.0 for iPhone and iPod Touch. It was some time available for the many developers in the possession of the iPhone beta firmware forthcoming but it is finally available for everyone.

A firmware update (most likely accompanied by new models) has led to the launch of iPhone 3.0. The popular software for managing your music library and sync with iPods and iPhones comes with support for a future software update 3.0 iPhone and iPod touch, and security enhancements.

The emergence of this new version of iTunes has no more relevant news, and even Apple often wait for their official announcements and the availability of new firmware for the iPhone (like the 2.0 firmware for a year) to launch versions of iTunes in this case has chosen to move forward and launch iTunes 8.2 right now to offer support for the impending iPhone and iPod touch with firmware 3.0

itunes-logoThis launch has been accompanied QuickTime 7.6.2, the Apple media player according to the company documentation “includes changes that improve reliability, compatibility and enhance security.”

ITunes 8.2 also resolves a vulnerability that allow execution of arbitrary code remotely via the use of the protocol “itms” that is managed via iTunes. However, this patch is just a minor detail when we consider that this edition of iTunes is the clear signal that arrives at last, the firmware 3.0 for iPhone and iPod touch.

How to Use IPod Touch More Than Just A Media Player

Let us be clear from the outset, I am neither the CEO of any company or person busier than you might imagine, however, as many of us, one way or another I have many things to do during the day, and like many, largely depends on my computer (my MacBook Pro) to achieve them.

Having said that, I must admit I am among those who would like to have both an iPhone 3G as an iPod Touch at the same time. I know it too but I like about both. However, since I moved mostly on foot, by taxi or in combination, having to show an iPhone every time someone calls you on the phone is a risk we prefer not to run. So for this and other reasons too much weight, my iPod Touch portable ended up being my platform of choice, that I carry with me all the time.

ipod-touch1What I was not expecting that to be in this situation give me a unique opportunity to try the iPod Touch as a mobile device itself, knowing that it is no 3G iPhone, but it has some disadvantages as well, also has some important advantages about the same:

  • Battery: I can listen to music on my iPod Touch a good part of the day, use the WiFi so moderate, who see some other video and still make use of other applications I use on a daily and still not charge the battery my iPod Touch more than once every day or day and a half. One big difference with an iPhone.
  • Accessibility: These days all you need to get an iPod Touch is a little over $ 200 or $ 250 U.S. dollars and mobility to the store, mall or wherever you go shopping. None of contracts, no monthly payments of 200 dollars (or more), no commitments cumbersome. Once you purchase, is ready o be used.

And it is worth. No need to tell you what the iPhone means to the cellular telephone market, but what makes it and the iPod Touch to “click” for me as for many users worldwide is the App Store. This little monster who has already taken over mill million downloaded applications can return to your iPhone / iPod Touch at (almost) whatever you want.

So to prove my point better, then I leave you with a day in the life of your server, and my iPod Touch (iPod only now) helps me to do things much faster, and organized efficient:

Awake at 8 a.m. to sound the alarm on my iPod (very strong and effective by the way). Using the Pocket Informant to see the commitments they have and the tasks that have to fulfill. Then I turn my Macbook Pro to sync some playlists made yesterday, besides a couple of games I want to prove that I need some files and then sync them via Air Sharing.

I forgot to download my email to my iPod so I make sure to do before leaving. In the taxi I hear some music while check my email and write the first lines of this article in the Notes (which will send email to my Mac later). Later I meet two friends who did not see years ago so take this opportunity to update their information in my Contacts, and we continue talking and making jokes while showing me where they live in the Google Maps and my friend showed me a video of his daughter one year old on Youtube.

We’re going to a Starbucks that is close to buy and take approximately frapuccinos WiFi to connect and see the bill as we go to the movies then also download my email and some articles of blogs to which I subscribed. While we finish our respective frapuccinos, I seek the direction of the Agent of Apple Authorized Service nearest my house (because I have some problems with quemdora of DVDs on my Mac), and finally we went to the cinema.

He finished the film and while the film came out, passed through the theater and I remember a book whose work has long wanted to buy “The Pillow Man” (an excellent thriller), and I note that on the Pocket Informant, I see that I have another appointment I dismissed my friends and me to the boarding house of another friend with whom I have a reunion. Once at home, you transfer some Word documents and Excel via the wireless signal in your home with the Air Sharing and I read some more blogs in NetNewsWire while reviewing the documents.

We finished the meeting, we talked a while and I’m leaving. Time to walk with a little music. The Arcade Fire, Beck Chairlift and sound wonderful, but it is a little late so I took another taxi. Study Japanese so I take a taxi to review some verbs Kanji and Japanese Kanji Japanese Flip and Flip respectively, and then some in “Japanese”, an excellent Japanese dictionary.

I come home, review and edit my appointments and tasks for tomorrow (again in Pocket Informant) and I remember making a transfer to my brother. Can I use my Macbook but not for me to do it from my iPod so I sent the transfer from there. Like to buy Blindness (Saramago) at Amazon and confirm the appointment with the agent for Apple Authorized Service within two days.

How do you manage to do these things with a single device, not including the iPhone-and at the same time pass so well? And without even worrying about the battery! Japanese dictionaries, databases whole language, read and download documents, watch videos on YouTube, I check my email and play Rolando (excellent game by the way). And that without counting the Contacts, Notes and the excellent support that Pocket Informant, and gives me that it is almost a personal assistant. All this with an iPod.

pocketinformant05-208x300

I’ve always liked the PDA’s, I had a couple (with Windows Mobile) and its time I had a liking to them. But the fact that you can make an iPod with almost all the most important things that a PDA is just unbelievable. And the iPod is faster, sharper, more reliable and is even starting to have very good games. And compared to a PDA is also cheaper.

As I wrote above, I’ve had PDAs before and I am very conscious of the limitations of the iPod Touch compared to those (many of which will be resolved with the release of iPhone OS 3.0). But for what I need and what I do is almost perfect. Sure, I do not have the demands of a senior manager or an expert in systems and technology, but perhaps that’s what Apple was (and probably “accidentally wanting”), a PDA for the user “average” for a PDA “the rest of us.”

It is difficult to conclude this article without going into some kind of cliché, but there is no other way to describe the potential here. Anyone who buys an iPod Touch and see beyond what most people do with one of them has the opportunity to find a bit of whatever you like. Sure, the iPod Touch / iPhone have become a tour-de-force for anyone even slightly interested in technology but not only for them, here’s a little bit of everything for us all.
