The Obama Time Capsule: The Book You Can Customize

HP and Rick Smolar, co-creators of the best-selling books “Day in Life” and “America 24 / 7,” announced “The Obama Time Capsule“, the first illustrated book of its kind, customizable, which shows the path of Barack Obama for president White House, including its first 100 days of administration.
The on demand printing technology from HP allows readers to customize the content of your book and print on demand, eliminating the high costs and paper waste that is normally associated with traditional publishing industry.

“Since campaigns based on YouTube videos to Facebook, the Obama campaign took the presidential race to a new level in terms of customization,” said Smolar, co-founder of Against All Odds Productions (AAO). “Through the combination of compelling narrative techniques from our team with the platform publishing print on demand leading HP, we allow millions of people to merge perfectly with this historic moment in their own personal experiences.”

Then, using the platform of HP print on demand via the Internet, readers simply answer a few questions, texts and photos uploaded and click “publish.” The result is a book rich in images, merging the names, photos and reviews of each buyer with the photographs of the main photographers of America and the original reviews of notable writers. The customization features include:

  • A personalized dedication page
  • Name on the cover and title page as “sponsor”
  • Staff photo in the back of the book
  • Custom text message of President Obama via mobile phone
  • Personalized invitation to take power
  • The photo appears next to the personal key supporters “Who’s Who” of Obama
  • Children’s artwork on a page of artwork related to Obama made by children across the country

To make this book possible, HP has developed a web-based platform to “publish” the book through the pages load a custom reader to print service providers appointed, then print the book using HP Indigo digital presses. Using the Web-based platform, publishers have no need for large press runs and avoid the costs of prepublicación. Furthermore, by printing only what is necessary, avoid excess inventory and waste.

“In the digital world, the combination of personal and professional content happens all the time. We are taking the same capabilities for printing, allowing people to customize the content prior to publication, “said Michael Mendenhall, senior vice president and director of marketing for HP. “Along with editors with vision as Rick Smolar, HP is democratizing the printing, publishing and innovating new business models that take advantage of this fundamental change occurring in the industry.”
